UFO BOOK

PUBLICATION DESIGN

Space is unimaginably big, and unknown. In some ways, this project felt the same way -- difficult to tackle and understand in its entirety. Space became a central concept in the design structure, with a consistent empty space throughout the book that slowly gets darker and more filled in. This design and grid structure invites the reader to consider what space might contain, and what empty space truly means, to complement the research on UFOs.

CONTENT

This piece is a 378-page book, with the content coming from the Condon Report. The objective of the project as a whole was to create a design system that utilized a strong grid, clear hierarchy, pacing, and visuals. A challenge presented here was the timeframe; creating an entire book in just three months, making it vast and difficult, much like the UFO’s it discusses.

PROCESS

The process began with reviewing the content, and the current visuals and tables, to begin to envision how they could be redesigned. Next was prototyping and sketching, and developing a system and theme for the piece. Due to the quick pacing of the project,  paragraph and character styles were essential to create an efficient workflow.

CHALLENGES

The biggest challenge was the amount of content to work with; learning to manage and organize a large document, and constructing a story. Creating a cohesive piece requires paper choices, redesigning charts and tables, and reimagining illustrations to fit with the typographic choices. Completing it required a high level of organization, to keep both ideas and work straight, the willingness to be less perfectionist and precious with the project.
