HANDED DOWN

DESIGN AS OBJECTS

This series of three items was inspired by handwritten family recipes, Pyrex bowls, and baking with my mom. The pattern is based on the Pyrex Butterprint pattern, but I reinterpreted it to represent my mom, myself, and my grandma, with memories of baking together mixed in. The whole project represents family memories, baking together, and an emphasis on home and objects handed down and shared. [BETTER IMAGES COMING!]

CONTENT

This project was intended to apply design to a set of three objects: a wearable, a home decor piece, and a houseware item. I chose to stay in the realm of baking, remembering using my grandma’s recipes and baking 10 different types of cookies with my mom at Christmas. My grandma passed down her Butterprint stacking bowls set, so I associate that pattern with family.

PROCESS

I started by sketching my own versions of the pattern, changing the icons to represent me, my mom, and my grandma. I then prototyped different items, before landing on my final set. I chose to make everything by hand, screenprinting the fabric myself, quilting the oven mitts, laser engraving the recipe box, and creating it all from start to finish.

CHALLENGES

Creating it all from beginning to end was a challenge, both in time management and the physical making. I screenprinted about 6 yards of fabric, quilting 16 oven mitts, sewing 2 aprons, and building 2 recipe boxes. I created a [overly detailed] to-do list, and a calendar, and stuck to it to get it all done within two weeks.
